Privacy.
This site works without visitor accounts, cookies, or advertising trackers. Aggregate, cookieless usage statistics come from a self-hosted Umami instance. The optional question assistant processes only what a visitor submits to it.
What this site processes
The website does not set its own cookies or create visitor accounts. Ordinary hosting request logs may contain an IP address, requested path, browser information, and timestamp.
Usage statistics
Page views are counted with Umami, an open-source analytics tool I host myself at analytics.wicker.life. It sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and does not store your IP address. Each visit records the page path without its query string, the referring site, browser and device type, screen size, language, and an approximate location (country, region and city) derived from the request before the IP address is discarded.
A few actions are counted as named events: opening and using Ask about David (which kind of question start, how many sources the answer used; never the question itself), clicks on email, GitHub and LinkedIn links, printing the CV, copying a citation, and opening a collaboration email draft (the selected area of work only). Statistics are aggregate and are not combined with any other data. Blocking the script with a content blocker has no effect on how the site works.
Ask about David
When you submit a question on Ask about David, the server sends the question, up to six recent messages from the current browser conversation, and a small set of retrieved public portfolio passages to the OpenAI API. API response storage is disabled in the request, and this website does not save the conversation to a database.
Do not enter private records, student identities, client administration data, health or financial information, or confidential documents. Defined private-information requests are refused before a model request is made. A short-lived in-memory request counter is used to limit repeated requests.
External links
Links to GitHub, LinkedIn, BISS, live projects, and email open services with their own privacy practices. Following one may disclose your IP address and browser information to that service.
If you send an email, its contents and address are processed by the relevant mail providers. Do not send student case files, identity documents, confidential legal material, or other sensitive personal data through a first-contact email.
Humanitarian and fieldwork material
Private student records, correspondence, source documents, original fieldwork files, and raw photo metadata are not part of the website repository or public build. Public material requires a separate verification, rights, consent, and sensitivity review.
